Basaltic Coastal Morphology and Anthropogenic Modification
by Linda Inês Silva, Instituto de Investigação em Vulcanologia e Avaliação de Riscos (IVAR) - Universidade dos Açores, Ponta Delgada, Portugal
Solidified basaltic lava flows form natural pools and channels along the coastline at Faial Island (Azores, Portugal), while a small harbour structure illustrates human adaptation to volcanic terrain. Cooling fractures and marine erosion illustrate the dialogue between volcanic activity and ocean dynamics.
