A landscape 'en miniature'
In the Castle Hill Basin on New Zealand's South Island Oligocene limestone deposited in a shallow marine environment became subsequently tectonically uplifted in the context of the later Tertiary and Quaternary development of the Southern Alps. At the culturally highly significant Kura Tāwhiti site in the Castle Hill Basin enclosed by in the easternmost Craigieburn and Torlesse Ranges constitutes an impressive rock formation. Created by karstic weathering its tor-like pillars and karren systems are reminding of mountains ranges and river drainage systems. This rock formation can truly be seen as a landscape 'en miniature'.
