Gabal Al-Modawara – A Natural Sedimentary Record on the Edge of the Fayoum Depression
by Ahmed-M- Mohy, Egyption, Damanhour, Egypt
Gabal Al-Modawara is one of the most prominent geological landmarks in the Fayoum Depression, where its slopes expose clear sedimentary successions representing different geological periods. The area is mainly composed of limestone, marl, and shale layers, reflecting ancient marine depositional environments associated with sea-level fluctuations during past geological epochs.
The site provides an excellent natural example for studying stratigraphy, depositional patterns, and geomorphological processes such as erosion and slope instability that have shaped the Fayoum landscape. Gabal Al-Modawara stands as a geological archive recording the evolution of sedimentary environments in the northern Western Desert of Egypt.
