Interbedded Sandstone and Shale Layers in Egypt’s Eastern Desert
This outcrop, located near Egypt’s New Administrative Capital in the Eastern Desert, showcases alternating beds of sandstone and shale, representing classic sedimentary layering. These strata reflect variations in depositional energy — with sandstone indicating higher-energy environments (e.g. channels or shorelines), and shale representing quieter, low-energy settings such as floodplains or offshore basins.
Such exposures offer valuable insights into the region’s paleoenvironment and sedimentary history.
