Sunset over the Sierra Nevada Mountains
by Jakob Rieger
Amazing view from Moro Rock, in the center of Sequoia National Park. Moro Rock is an exfoliation dome, a typical geological feature of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. These domes develop through large-scale spheroidal weathering of granites and granitoids within the Sierra Nevada Batholith. As erosion gradually removed overlying material, pressure release caused the rocks to develop curved sheeting joints. Over time, this weathering shaped the rock into a rounded summit, forming what is known as an exfoliation dome.
