Another day of fieldwork on the 'Moon'
by Annelotte Weert, Delft University of Technology, Netherlands
A snapshot of the Hawaii Space Exploration Analogue and Simulation (HI-SEAS) habitat, about an hour after an early sunrise. Another beautiful day is announced by the rising sun. At the same time, sea fog slowly retreats from the valley, revealing the majestic Mauna Kea in the distance.
I took this photo during an analogue Moon mission at the HI-SEAS habitat, which is located at the flank of Mauna Loa in Hawaii. Together with the other five crew members, we spent two weeks locked up inside the habitat, simulating a lunar mission. One of the main objectives was to conduct geological fieldwork under simulated conditions, which meant we could only leave the habitat to study the volcanic rocks while wearing our space suits.
