Ripples and dunes, a question of scale

by Marine Le Minor

Wind ripples photographed at Te Paki Giant sand dunes, Te Paki Recreation Reserve, Northland, New Zealand. The wind constantly blows above the dunes and reworks them and their surface. Footprints vanish so quickly that it gives you the impression to be the first person to set foot in this incredible place. Aeolian transport drives the formation of sedimentary structures of different shapes and sizes. Ripples are much smaller than dunes: about 5 centimeters against 150 meters at Te Paki Giant sand dunes.
