Sunset from the helipad.
by Rebecca Robertson, Durham University, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Catching sunset - should weather allow - served as appetiser to the evening meal. Over two months of life onboard D/V Chikyu, a daily rhythm of sample processing and lab work punctuated by meals developed human intricacies. My favourite was the pre-dinner whip round the labs with exclamations of "it's looking like a cracking sunset tonight!", followed by a pilgrimage to the helipad. This image was taken on one such hiatus, lying flat on the deck to capture the relaxed moment. Taken on a Pentax MX using UltraMax 400 film.
