A living 'Ice-Veteran', battling since ages
The picture depicts the snout (called the 'Gaumukh', meaning Cow's mouth) of the mighty Gangotri Glacier located at an altitude of 4000 m, in the Garhwal Himalayas, Uttarakhand, India. The debris-covered glacial ice front can be seen with the stream (called the 'Bhagirathi') emerging towards the left, and a small temporary lake forming towards the front. Behind the snout, some great Himalayan peaks having an elevation of over 6000 m can also be seen.
