Inselbergs in Quixadá
by Lionel Siame
Inselbergs are prominent landforms found on cratonic continental surfaces, representing an advanced stage of millions of years of complex interplay between climate, tectonics, and surface processes. These interactions have led to landscape dissection through differential denudation of resistant crystalline rocks, which now rise abruptly from relatively flat or gently undulating surrounding surfaces. The granitic inselberg field of Quixadá (Ceará, NE Brazil) is amongst the most impressive in the world.
