Alkumru Dam on Botan Stream: Water and Energy Management
by İbrahim Halil, Batman University, Batman, Türkiye
The Alkumru Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant, located on the Botan River, was built to use the water resources of the Tigris River for energy production. The dam, which is 134 meters high from the foundation, produces 900 million kWh of energy annually. This photo taken from Tillo Castle shows the surrounding geomorphological structure, the width of the valley and the impact of human intervention on nature. The dam has a strategic importance for the region in terms of both energy security and sustainable management of water resources.
