A Sedimentary Outcrop: graben lead to normal fold

M. HAMZA GEOLOGICAL FIELD TRIPS AND CAMPING

Alongside my last geological field trips and camping in the North Coast Desert of Egypt "North Africa", I took some much more interesting photos for the most remarkable and distinguished outcrops.

•In the present photo, the two geological structures appear:

1) The first is the normal fold or anticline.

2) The second is the graben due to faulting process impacted on the region where the outcrop exposures.

•Geologic Setting of the Region:

-The sedimentation of the layers occurred horizontally, then the folding process affected deposited layers took place, then the faulting process impacted on the region where the present outcrop exposures, so the last process deformed the layers making a graben.

•Science Simplification Vibes for Non-specialists:

-The term anticline refers to one type of folds that is characterized by the curved top, such as what you make when you hold up a straight elastic rod and you start compressing it from its two right-and-lift sides upward, so the curvaturing will appear, making an arc-shaped or curved-upward shape.

-The term fault refers to the fracturing process impacting on the region or the restricted one as well as appeared in the present photo.

-The two most important terms:
A: the term of fold refers to a curvaturing in the rocks.
B: the term of fault refers to a fracturing impacting on the rocks.
