Tojal dos Pereiros - Felsic granulites
by Nuno Correia, Porto, Portugal
Tojal dos Pereiros geosite is part of the natural heritage of the area covered by the Urbanization Plan of the city of Bragança and the Municipal Master Plan, integrating the category of "sites with geological interest". The importance of this site is due to the occurrence of mafic and felsic granulites (generated in the lower continental crust) and metaperidotites (generated in the mantle), allowing a "Journey" to the Earth’s interior. During the expansion of Cantarias Industrial Zone where these rocks occur, an area with three outcrops is reserved for protection. The process of statutory designation as “Local Natural Monument” coordinated by the Bragança City Council is in progress.
