A view from the Ukko-Koli, FInland

by Teemu Karlsson, Finland

A view from the top of the Koli fells in Lieksa, eastern Finland, one of the National Landscapes of Finland. The highest peak, known as Ukko-Koli, reaches 347 m above sea level and stands 253 m above the Lake Pielinen below. The peaks are composed of resilient quartzite, aged approximately 2,000-2,300 million years, the remnants of the once towering Karelian mountain range (Karelides), which reached heights of five kilometers. The surface of the quartzite is polished by glaciers, and also glacial marks such as striations and chatter marks can be seen. The island chains in the Lake Pielinen are formed by a glacial esker.
