Fullmoon rise over the lonely tree on the hill
by Cyril Mayaud, Karst Research Institute ZRC SAZU, Postojna, Slovenia
Due to its foresaken aspect, the hill of Sovič is a peculiar landmark of the region around Postojna (Slovenia). Therefore, we discussed with a friend on how could we emphasize its beauty in an original way. As a fullmoon was planned soon, we decided to have an attempt to shot it during the moonrise and agreed that she should be on the top of the hill when I would take the picture. While the weather was clear during most of the day, some clouds started to move at the horizon right where the moon should appears. Fortunately, they cleared up at the moment the moon started to ascend, and my friend could go close to the tree to add a more romantic touch to the photo. Even if this picture looks at first only poetic, it has also a scientific value. Indeed, it can remind us of the importance of the moon for life on Earth, as our satellite affects the magnitude of the tides as well as biological cycle of several animal and vegetal species.
