The beauty of shells
The shell of the oyster Crassostrea from the Miocene of Spain is composed of calcitic alternating dense and porous shell layers. These nearly 15 million year old shell layers are sampled for light stable oxygen isotope analyses to reconstruct past seawater properties. The image shows a thin section of such an shell with its wavy shell layers.
