Bodele, dust hot spot of the North

by Pavla Dagsson

Deserts in the Arctic. In NE Iceland, lava from the Holuhraun eruption 2014-2015 created a natural dam for glacial rivers leaving the largest ice cap in Europe, Vatnajökull. Now a sediment lake is rapidly growing there while dust is suspended almost on a daily basis no matter the presence of the glacial water in the lake. Therefore we call this extraordinary place 'Bodélé of the North'. Bodele depression is the most active dust source on Earth.
