"Blood sun" over northern Germany

by Wolfgang Fraedrich, Hamburg, Germany

A nature spectacle of the special kind could be observed on October 17, 2017 in northern Germany. The sun was shining like an orange "fireball". The fact that it was foggy, you could easily see the sun without eclipse glasses. The cause of this incident was hurricane "Ophelia", with its foothills dust from the Sahara and soot particles from the forest fires in Portugal which have been transported towards Central and Northern Europe. The increased exposure of the atmosphere to dust and soot particles broke the sunlight. Such weather conditions can occur several times a year, but very rarely is the combination of the weather conditions, the amount of entrained Saharan dust and the soot particles released in a forest fire in south-western Europe. The picture has not been edited later!
