Alpenglow on Aoraki
by Katrina Sauer, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand
Sunset over Aoraki/Mt. Cook, the highest mountain in New Zealand (3,724 m), taken from Mueller Hut. Aoraki lies in the Southern Alps (Kā Tiritiri o te Moana), which run 500km along the South Island. The collision of the Pacific and Australian plates formed the Alpine Fault, which runs along the western flank of the Southern Alps and is responsible for the uplift of this impressive mountain range.
